IEEE/NASA Symposium on Mass Storage March 15-18 to Present Research and Practice in Information-Based Access to Storage

The vast array of information critical to the world's economy requires advanced mass storage systems tightly integrated with information management systems. On March 15-18, 1999, the joint 16th IEEE Mass Storage Systems Symposium and 7th NASA Goddard Conference on Mass Storage Systems and Technologies will present the latest research on systems designed to handle data collections as they grow to billions of objects and petabytes in size.

The Mass Storage Symposium, to be held in San Diego, California, will focus on the theme, "Information-based Access to Storage: The Foundation of Information Systems." The integration of archival storage systems into databases and digital libraries has started. Persons interested in the storage issues surrounding the integration of archives into information management systems are encouraged to register for the symposium.

The conference begins with a daylong tutorial on emerging standards affecting storage system architectures, chaired by Rodney Van Meter of the Quantum Corporation. The topics and speakers will include independent consultant Geoff Peck on interoperability and sharing, Roger Ronald of Power Micro Research on storage area networks, and Don Sawyer of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center on total-life management.

The technical program, chaired by Reagan Moore of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), will feature invited talks by Jim Bain of Carnegie Mellon University on "NSIC Magnetic Tape Systems and Technology Roadmap" and Joe Stooks of the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) on "NIMA's Very Large Digital Libraries."

Other speakers will cover modeling storage systems, architecture and performance of storage systems, and database-archive integration. Andrew Hanushevsky of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and Marcin Nowak of CERN, for example, will discuss "Pursuit of a Scalable High Performance Multi-Petabyte Database: A Case Study."

Additional sessions will cover data management architecture components, storage system applications, striping across media, and a poster session. The conference concludes with a roundtable on emerging removable media products and vendor presentations.
