SDSC's Chaitan Baru Gives Invited Talk on GEON Cyberinfrastructure at HPDC-12
Published July 20, 2003
SDSC's Chaitan Baru, codirector of SDSC's Data and Knowledge Systems (DAKS) program, gave an invited talk at the Twelfth IEEE International Symposium on High-Performance Distributed Computing (HPDC) meeting, held in conjunction with the Global Grid Forum (GGF) in Seattle.
Baru's talk, "GEON Cyberinfrastructure for the Geosciences" described the ground-breaking Geosciences Network, GEON, which is focusing on the key issues of cross-discipline data sharing and semantic integration for the geosciences, as well as visualization and grid computing. "To build usable cyberinfrastructure, close collaboration between IT researchers and scientists is essential," said Baru. "We've designed GEON from the beginning as a collaborative project, with geoscience disciplines driving IT applications and research." In turn, IT advances in GEON's scalable grid will advance the geosciences, enabling interdisciplinary research in collaborations that are larger and more rapid than previously possible.
Other invited talks were given by Ian Foster of the University of Chicago on "Grid services as a Research Enabler" and Malcolm Atkinson of the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh on "Structured Data and the Grid: Access and Integration." - Paul Tooby
