GEON Presentations Popular at GridSphere Workshop

Published February 14, 2005

SDSC GEON developers gave two presentations at the Portal, Portlet and GridSphere Workshop, held February 3-4 at Louisiana State University in conjunction with the 13th Annual Mardi Gras Conference, "Frontiers of Grid Applications and Technologies," sponsored by the Center for Computation and Technology (CCT). GEON, a groundbreaking NSF-funded collaboration between earth and computer scientists developing that is cyberinfrastructure for the geosciences, has adopted the open-source GridSphere portal construction toolkit as the framework for the portal connecting that connects users to the extensive array of GEON-hosted resources.

The well-attended presentations indicate the growing impact of GEON cyberinfrastructure on the wider community. Ashraf Memon, GEON Chief Software Architect, gave a talk on the overall GEONgrid Portal. Following this presentation, GridSphere's chief software architect highlighted GEON as a major success story in the GridSphere community. The second presentation, by developer Kurt Mueller of SDSC's Grid, Portals and MiddlewareTechnology group, covered the Grid Authentication Management Architecture (GAMA) being used in the GEON portal for user authentication. Numerous attendees expressed interest in this approach, requesting that GEON make this code available to the community for use in their own sites.
