SDSC Director Delivers Keynote Addresses at CENIC Annual Conference
Published March 13, 2006
Today, SDSC Director Fran Berman delivered the keynote addresses at "Your Connection to the World," the annual networking conference held by the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) at the Marriott Oakland City Center Hotel in Oakland, CA.
Dr. Berman's talk entitled "Science as a Team Sport" focused on the challenges of using today's technologies in unprecedented new ways to advance science and societal applications. The teaming of computers, data, networks, personal devices, and other technologies are providing new abilities to receive and utilize information anywhere and from a wide spectrum of sources. Dr. Berman discussed the implications of these new abilities on policy, reliability, and social dynamics that occur when information technologies are teamed "at scale".
"From games to financial models to earthquake predictions, both science and society depend upon technology as a critical tool. Using the myriad of technologies available in a coordinated "team-oriented" way to drive today's applications provides an unprecedented challenge," said Berman. "The CENIC community is at the point-of-the-spear in both use and development of the information technologies that are enabling new generations of research and education."
The conference, "Your Connection to the World," is being held March 13-15, 2006 at the Oakland Marriott City Center Hotel in Oakland, CA by the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC). The conference includes three days of presentations by leading network experts, researchers, and educators about high-bandwidth networking for California's educational and research institutions such as that provided by CENIC.
